Plans forward
November 12th, 2008I’m a little stuck. My next project to do intuitive circuits is taking awhile to get some momentum. I whole heartedly believe that it will dramatically change the speed and depth to which students can grasp understanding AC and DC circuits. Don’t know if I should keep working in the same (very old) Java 1.1.8 where I can use my current code and pretty much guarantee that every browser will run it, or if I should move to the latest Java platform that has all the snazzy graphics routines (but not everyone has installed), or if I should use Flash.
But hey, indecision is a tool for procrastination. Anybody have any advice? In the meanwhile, we’ve adopted a new little boy, and he’s keeping me quite busy - happy to say. At the same time, I’m still excited about getting this new circuits tutorial out. I think it will be really cool.

My vote goes for Flash/AS3. It has a huge installed base and is convenient for users to install, it plays well with most every current browser/OS combo, and it’s simple to draw and code in. OTOH if you have a bunch of code that would be a hassle to translate, it might be worthwhile to stay with Java 1.1.8…
In any case I’d love to see a circuits tutorial from your direction. When did you say your kids graduate?

Hi Shawn,
Thanks for the advice and the comments. I downloaded Adobe Flex Trial about a week ago to do AS3! I do have a bunch of Java Code that I made myself, but it’s a bunch of rookie code since I was learning, and Flex will give me the “opportunity” to clean up my act and make this thing a little more modular. I think I’m going to stick with that Flex choice.
My perception after looking at some books, is that AS3 in the Flash environment will be a lot easier to use that Java, for what I’m trying to do. I think I’m going to go for the $299 Flex plunge after my trial.
